If you are already a client and need help using the tools availabe for your site, check out our Help Section and our Support FAQ's Every hosting company is set up a bit different. If you are an experienced web developer, you can find more detailed information and links in the Help section of this website. If you are just starting, you'll find the basic questions answered here.
How do I know what size hosting package I need? Good question. The easy answer is that you should choose your package by looking at the tools you need. The smallest package may be more than enough disk space, but not offer enough email addresses or dynamic resources. Evaluate by number of email address you need, special tools such as ColdFusion or ASP and finally disk space and bandwidth. Remember, we never charge upgrade fees when your needs grow. Can I transfer my existing website to AKALT.net? YES! If your site is currently hosted by another service you need to sign up for an AKALT hosting plan and then go to your domain registrar to change the DNS record. You will receive the proper nameserver information in your confirmation email. Does your server have outages? We do everything in our power to keep our servers up and running. If your site is down so is our business! We have state of the art hardware, software and systems in place to make outages unacceptable. The average "up-time" for any one of our servers is more than a year. Even planned upgrades and maintenance are performed without interruption of service. HOWEVER, it is important that you understand that if an outage occurs we will do everything within our power to restore service as soon as possible. We strongly recommend that all sites be backed up on a regular basis. When and how will I be invoiced? If you are signed up through a PayPal subscription you will not recieve an email but will receive a receipt of payment. Do you charge for parked/pointed domains? If you have a hosting account with us we offer 1 parked/pointed domain free. After that, we charge a one time only set up fee of $15/domain. However, we strongly recommend that you use your domain registrar's forwarding or redirecting service to prevent search engine penalties. Do I have to host with you if I buy my domains at AKALT.net? No. Your domains are yours and you have complete control over where you host. What exactly is disk space and bandwidth? Diskspace is the size your website can be. Every single letter on your website has to be stored somewhere on the server. Each letter is one byte, and a megabyte is roughly one million bytes. HTML pages are usually very small, but it is the extra images, scripts, and even databases that can take up large amounts of disk space. Do you offer Linux/Unix hosting? No. All our servers are Windows servers. We chose Windows servers based on the tools we use most often and prefer to develop with. Will the search engines be able to find my website on your servers? The answer is absolutely YES, if ... Will you host my "Adult Content" website? No. We offer a shared hosting environment and adult content sites can get everyone on the server in trouble with the search engines. Moreover, we will not host unlawful, threatening, abusive, libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, or profane websites. We're all for freedom of expression and have accepted politically incorrect websites. We're just not interested in being sued so you can break the law. What kind of data center are your servers in? AKALT.net Servers are stored at the world famous InfoMart telecom hotel in partnership with SoftLayer Technologies near downtown Dallas, Texas. Specializing in data center and hosting facilities, INFOMART is home to multiple data centers including MCI, Level 3, Equinix, Verio, Switch & Data, Verizon, DataSides, and more. If your servers are in Texas, how can you be an Alaskan hosting company? We looked for the best facility for our infrastructure. We support and promote Alaska and Alaskan businesses and our servers are only a part of the package we must offer to support your websites. It doesn't matter how cool the software we offer or how screaming fast the server is if it isn't in a facility that can adequately support our clients, their websites and their business goals. |
